Editing
I provide a variety of editing services for social scientists. Whether you’re looking for a conversation partner to discuss early ideas, a final polish on a manuscript, or something in between, I’d love to work with you! I’ve helped scholars at a variety of career stages secure grant awards and successfully publish in leading social science journals, including Social Forces, Socio-Economic Review, Poetics, the American Journal of Cultural Sociology, Big Data & Society, and Ethnic and Racial Studies.
In addition to editing formal academic article and book manuscripts, I specialize in helping academics translate research findings for broader audiences. As the blog editor for Contexts, I’ve worked with authors on jargon-free, public-facing essays addressing everything from racial vocabularies to NBA All-Star nominations to The Golden Bachelor (read an interview about my role here and check out some examples below).

Client testimonials
“Elena is an extraordinary editor who sees through to what I'm trying to convey and helps me tease out the central components of my argument while removing elements that distract readers and reviewers. She offers constructive feedback on strengthening both argument and analysis, including reorganizing data, reframing core ideas, restructuring sentences, better connecting subthemes, and adjusting tone. Despite considering myself an experienced writer and scholar with 15 years of academic publishing experience, Elena helped me elevate my writing to an impressive new level. I had the great pleasure of working with her and deeply appreciate her hard work on my recent articles, including one forthcoming in Social Forces.”

“I hired Elena to edit my book manuscript (under contract with Oxford University Press), and she was a truly fantastic editor. She was incredibly quick yet also very thorough, and her edits were precisely what my manuscript needed. I deeply appreciated her attention to detail and her precision. Above all, I appreciated that she actually cared about the story I was trying to tell (above and beyond fixing errors).”

“I highly recommend Elena to anyone looking to sharpen their academic or public writing. She provided critical feedback on a challenging, and ultimately successful, revise-and-resubmit at Ethnic and Racial Studies. She also worked with me on a public-facing piece, expertly pruning it to clarify the core argument while preserving its voice and tone. Her comments were clear, strategic, and attuned to both scholarly rigor and accessibility. She knows what it takes to get a publication over the finish line and how to help you get there.”

“I found Elena at a time when I had three pressing R&Rs at my desk during the middle of the fall semester. I am a new tenure-track professor and a non-native English speaker. Hence, I always run my work by expert editors. Elena did so much more than grammar when it came to bringing those articles to the finish line. She cut words, worked on structure, and pointed to potential avenues for strengthening my argument. I recommend her wholeheartedly—with her analytical scholar-editorship, I started the spring with two publications. I am sure I will go back to her for the third piece.”

“When I was trying to attempt a new style of writing, I got very in my head (and in my own way). Working with Elena helped clear a path forward. I successfully published the piece we collaborated on and many others in that style since then. Sometimes you just need someone to help you shake your ideas and your voice loose.”

“I was in dire need of a talented editor who knew the field of sociology and was nimble enough to handle a theoretical paper that worked to synthesize a wide array of literatures on emotions, motivation, and rewards. Elena was up to the challenge and exceeded my expectations. She is professional, an excellent communicator, and provided both the copyediting and stylistic editing I needed. I would not hesitate recommending her to colleagues regardless of the type of publication they need another set of trained eyes on.”
